A little more motion work. When I was kinda' re-vamping the new blog I created this video thinking I'd use it as a nice little title animation. Ufortunately it didn't really work out and I much prefered it as a still.

VC Vault
More competition work, this time for VC'Vault. The company was looking for a stong solid image to represent their company.
After lots of initial drawing I started to see a relation to the \/ (VV) and how they
/\
could form the shape of the bars on a vault or safe. Eager to continue with my 3D work I came up with this,

Motion Test
Not really much development into lighting in these tests at all. Everything's still a little flat but I was mostly concentrating on the idea of motion and key framing.
Motion Test II Working a little more with shadows and better lighting. Still way off but at this point lighting is improving.

Introduction to 3D Sotware
After wanting to give this a go for years I've finally made the jump the 3D. Starting new software is something I always dread as it's frustrating and takes a lot of time.
The packages I played around with was Maya and Cinema 4D. After experimenting with both for around a month, following video tutorials I started to lean more towards cinema 4D. The package is much easier to use as I still find the UI of MAYA a little daunting even now; and it does everything I need it to at this stage. I'm currently using it at the moment for creating MoGraph text and simple animations such as moving text an that.
Anyways, back on track. This was the first render of Cinema 4D. Lighting was my main struggle with this, it looked aweful and had to be completly re-done in PS. Sinse this stage I'm now working better with lighting, making the most of reflectors, HDRI sky and Global Illumination.

Second Competition Win
Wake Clothing. Soon to be made, my own board short design! Very proud about this one as I've always dreamt of the idea that people could be wearing something I've made. Should be on sale next year, unfortunatley I won't be getting sent a pair.. not happy about this but I'll definitely be buying a pair (even though it wasn't my favourite design :P)

Logo work is something I've previously avoided as its really not interested me. With that in mind this became a bit of a challenge.
I was doing lots of research at the time to what makes a good logo. For me, the logo's I found most appealing were the not so obvious ones.
I found myself sketching out the letterforms and trying to see a way to intergrate the ideas.

Book Design
Not really anything I was interested in which is why I optied to give it a try.
Muddied | A story of a young girl that "pours away her innocense through a series of drink and drugs". Ebook Cover, story sounded terrible but I got some really nice feedback from this.
"Richard, This is a great cover, however it doesn't evoke the emotion I'm looking for. I'm not even sure how I would change it because I love your work but it just isn't right for my book. If I were to try and give you comments it would be - turn the bottle sideways, lose the hand, pour the transluscent liquid into an image that represents a person's mind being split at the seams. Thanks so much. Meg"
Pretty crazy feedback I know, she didnt even mention brains being split in the breif 0_o
Collapse | Won't go into detail on this one as it's said on the back.
Hot Lunch | Cook Book to get the perfect man.. Cringed making this cover but I was wanting to try different work and this was that.
The Artifact Competition | This job was so messed up I just had to do it! Bird headed guys with a gritty theme, made me smile just reading. So this work used a little photmanipulation applying eagle heads to people. Still makes me chuckle now. Few pics of the cover:

First Competition Win
I came across this competition for a series of power kite designs for Griffin wake boarding. Starting from scratch I put in lots of research into the current market, sketched out sections of existing designs I liked and started to form my own style around this.
Throughout the process there was lots of comunication, lots of going backwards and forwards with the design. First real experience of this and it went really well as we ended up getting exactly what the customer wanted without even meeting in person.
Below are some development pieces and final outcomes.

What I've Done
Over the Summer Break I've being getting involved in various competitions on the net. I wanted to experience a variety of work, remove myself from comfort zones and generally develop some skills.
I've looked into various software packages, more recently Maya and Cinema 4D. Great software which I believe is going to prove invaluable as this could well be something I'm interested in looking into; Motion graphics/3D media.
What I'm finding interesting is the combination of software I'm beginning to use. Drawing up curves in AE, taking it over to Cinema 4D to create an asset for extrusion, altering the timing and colour values from this in AE, and adding over textures from PS. Basically using everything now which is great as I no longer feel limited in any way by what I want to create.
This first post is dated a little late. Obviously it's me and we all know how much I enjoy blogging..... So I've not being up to date with documenting my progress but I'll start to go through it all now, not in great detail, just enough in case anyone’s actually reading to follow.
